Know Warehouse protection, avoid large exposed balances and consider a shield when holding resources or mining while offline.
Scout first, avoid wasteful troop losses and respect alliance diplomacy. Do not create a problem the whole Horde has to solve.
If you will be away for hours, put idle marches to work on resource tiles. Recall troops only if they are not mining; strongly consider shielding if you leave them gathering.
